African Wedding Décor With Cultural Depth & Luxury Design

Columbus, Ohio has a remarkable and growing African community — Somali families in the North Side and Hilltop, Nigerian and Ghanaian families throughout the metro area, Ethiopian and Eritrean communities, Congolese and West African families who have made Ohio home. These are communities that celebrate with intention, with color, with joy, and with pride. Events By Maryam has been honored to be part of these celebrations for years. Our guide to Somali wedding traditions and Aroos décor walks through each event.

African weddings are not one-size-fits-all — and neither is our approach. A Nigerian Igbo traditional wedding has completely different visual requirements than a Yoruba wedding, which differs from a Ghanaian outdooring ceremony. A Somali Aroos has its own distinct aesthetic, its own stage design traditions, its own color world. An Ethiopian or Eritrean wedding carries its own cultural visual language. We study, we learn, we consult — and then we design something that feels like it could only have been made for you.

What unites African wedding celebrations is the scale of joy — large guest counts, vibrant colors, rich fabrics, and an atmosphere that makes everyone feel the celebration. We love this energy and we know how to design for it. From the traditional ceremony to the reception, from the pre-wedding celebrations to the after-party, we bring expertise, cultural sensitivity, and luxury design to every African wedding we touch.

“They worked hard in putting the bride’s choices of the stage settings from the flowers to the drapes together in such a short time, they made sure the stage was set for both parts of the ceremony and looked beautiful both times.”
